At the helm

Samuel J. Abrams is a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he focuses on questions of civic and political culture and American ideologies. He is concurrently a professor of politics and social science at Sarah Lawrence College, and a faculty fellow with New York University’s Center for Advanced Social Science Research.

He earned his B.A. in political science and government from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. and M.A. in the same field from Harvard University.

Mark Bauerlein is Emeritus Professor of English at Emory University and an editor at First Things magazine. He served as director of the Office of Research and Analysis at the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003 to 2005. He is the author or editor of 11 books, including “The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future” and “The Dumbest Generation Grows Up: From Stupefied Youth to Dangerous Adults.” His essays and commentary have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other national publications.

He earned his B.A. in English from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles.

John Ellis is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of German Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He taught at universities in England, Wales, and Canada before joining UCSC in 1966, serving as dean of the Graduate Division in 1977–86. He is the author of ten books, including “The Breakdown of Higher Education: How It Happened, the Damage It Does, and What Can Be Done.” His articles on education reform have appeared in prominent national publications.

He earned his B.A. in German and philosophy from London University, and his Ph.D. in German literature from the same institution.

Thomas Lindsay is the Higher Education Policy Director for Next Generation Texas. He has more than two decades’ experience in education management and instruction, including service as a dean, provost, and college president.

He earned his B.A. in political science from Northern Illinois University, and his Ph.D. and M.A. in political science and government from the University of Chicago.

Steven McGuire is the Paul & Karen Levy Fellow in Campus Freedom at the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, where he directs ACTA’s Campus Freedom Initiative and writes, podcasts, and speaks on free speech and academic freedom. He was previously director of the Matthew J. Ryan Center for the Study of Free Institutions and the Public Good and associate teaching professor at Villanova University. He is the co-editor of three books, and his writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Fox News, and other national publications.

He earned his B.A. from the University of Lethbridge, his M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan, and his Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America.
